ANIMAL SHELTER PERSONNEL ARE EMPLOYEES OF THE ANIMAL SERVICE CENTER OF THE MESILLA VALLEY - NOT THE CITY OF LAS CRUCES.

Position Overview

Performs highly responsible and specialized office support and customer care duties for the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV). The ideal candidate will have exceptional office support skills, customer service experience, and a heart for animals.

Work is performed in a kennel/shelter setting; animals may be in work areas. Exposure to disinfectant solutions and animal odors. Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.

Physical and Work Environment

Light physical demands; frequent use of personal computer; some lifting of files and reports; occasional lifting of objects up to 30 pounds; may require sitting for prolonged periods; may involve handling animals.

Position involves completing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal hours, and responding to customer issues. May be assigned to a non-traditional work schedule. The position is subject to drug testing per applicable regulations and policies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality customer service and promote the organization's mission, policies, services, and programs.
  • Assist the public with animal intake and adoption processes, including counseling and education.
  • Complete paperwork for adoptions, microchip registration, licenses, owner reclaims, and relinquishments.
  • Assist with scheduling sterilization surgeries.
  • Accurately perform data entry and maintain data integrity.
  • Handle financial transactions, operate a cash register, and balance the cash drawer.
  • Follow up with phone calls to finalize adoptions, schedule surgeries, or update programs.
  • Assist with off-site events related to adoptions, clinics, or community outreach.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for animals and visitors.
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts in the shelter.
  • Treat all animals humanely and promote a humane attitude.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma plus two years of clerical, accounting, or customer service experience. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered. Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and email. Valid driver's license preferred; bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are desirable. Additional certifications may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Availability to work seven days a week, including holidays, with a flexible schedule. Compassion for animals and willingness to work in a shelter environment.

Knowledge of: Office practices, business arithmetic, English language, customer service, shelter policies.

Skills in: Data entry, arithmetic, report writing, meeting deadlines, judgment, record keeping.

Ability to: Prioritize tasks, communicate effectively, establish effective relationships.
