Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. is looking for a Dockworker to join the OD Family. This role is vital to the safe, efficient loading and unloading of freight, and to supporting overall warehouse and material handling operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and a team-driven approach.
Job Summary
The dockworker must efficiently load and unload freight, ensuring correct items are placed on the right trucks. Safety is paramount. Dock Workers use equipment such as forklifts and manual handling techniques to move materials. Proper securing of freight with airbags, cardboard, and straps is essential to prevent damage during transport. This position directly impacts the reliability of deliveries to customers.
Primary Responsibilities
- Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually, in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines. Utilize loading techniques such as loading tight or cross loading.
- Transport personnel and/or freight throughout the service center on non-forgiving surfaces.
- Utilize Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations within the service center.
- Read and interpret shipping labels. Complete forms used in freight movement such as shipping orders, manifests, freight bills, exception forms, and related documentation as needed.
- Hand load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary.
- Ensure quality loading of all trailers.
- Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (e.g. pallets, straps, rope).
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; operate in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.

Job Qualifications
Education:
- High school degree or equivalent
Experience:
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.
- Working knowledge of freight transportation processes.
- Knowledge of loading techniques such as loading tight and cross loading.
- Familiarity with freight movement forms (e.g., shipping orders, manifests, freight bills, exception forms).
- Ability to use the dock yard management system to monitor shipment locations.
- Availability to work flexible hours to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Ability to operate a handheld tablet when needed.

- Standing up to 8 hours per shift on non-forgiving surfaces; 5–7 days per week.
- Sitting on a forklift up to 8 hours per shift; 5–7 days per week.
- Walking up to 8 hours per day on various surfaces; bending, stooping, kneeling as needed.
- Climbing onto/off of the forklift; moving in confined spaces.
- Handling freight up to 500 lbs per trailer with or without assistive devices; occasional heavy lifting as described in duties.
- Pushing/Pulling freight up to 100 lbs; operating forklift components and related equipment.
- Vision and hearing requirements for safety inspections and cross-dock operations.
- Frequent reaching, gripping, and handling of tools, straps, and tablets.
- Ability to work varied shifts to meet schedules; ability to work in hot or cold environments and in noise or odors as applicable.

Work environments may include loading/unloading in enclosed trailers, exposure to various weather conditions, and variable noise and lighting.
