Overview
This position is responsible for the management of all loading dock functions, unloading and distribution of incoming freight to laboratories and offices. The Attendant supports the department by moving furniture and setting up tables, chairs, etc., for departmental events. The Attendant may perform other duties as needed. The Attendant assists in developing the building Asset Management program and its annual inventory, monitors and orders special and routine compressed gases, handles hazardous shipping, perishable materials, and sensitive research materials, and serves as the primary point of contact for vendors and internal customers. They coordinate with campus management and security for access and delivery issues and in emergencies. The Attendant backs up the Building Manager as needed and is part of the Operations Team focused on maintaining high levels of customer service across the department and University community.
Responsibilities
- Manage and unload all incoming and outgoing freight, gases, deliveries to laboratories, and furniture moves. Sort and distribute freight to end users such as Lab Animal Resources, Building Operations, laboratories, and administrative offices.
- Maintain supplies for the building, administrative offices, and laboratories as needed.
- Sort and deliver incoming mail from USPS and other carriers to recipients' mailboxes or offices.
- Place orders for special and routine compressed gases, dry ice, etc., and monitor stock; order other loading dock supplies as needed.
- Perform related duties as required, including moving/setting up furniture for events.
- May drive departmental vehicle as required.
- Assist in managing the building’s capital asset program; maintain inventory of departmentally owned equipment, assess status, suggest replacements, direct disposal/surplus, locate and label assets as they arrive, and update locations in the database.
- Manage all logistical delivery access (campus security perimeter entry clearance, card access, and visitor access requests) as required.
Qualifications
- Essential Formal Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Essential Work Experience: 3+ years.
- Essential Physical Requirements:
- Stand or walk 2-4 hours at a time for up to 6 hours per day.
- Sit for up to 2 hours per day.
- Lift or carry up to 25 pounds frequently (34–66% of the work day); up to 100 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the work day).
- Push or pull up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Repetitive hand use for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling.
- Occasional kneeling, crawling, bending, squatting, reaching overhead, and climbing stairs (up to 33% of the work day).
- Lift up to 100 pounds; lift up to 50 pounds overhead.
- Work outdoors on a loading dock in varied environmental conditions; possess full range of body motions and physical agility.
- Minimum Knowledge/Skills: Physical strength, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, basic computing inventory software, strong customer service and interpersonal skills, valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: Loading dock/mailroom experience; basic understanding of laboratory products/equipment; excellent written and oral communication; ability to use asset management software (e.g., PeopleSoft Asset Management).
