Overview
Manufacturing Engineer role at thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, Inc. The position is focused on improving the safety, quality and efficiency of manufacturing processes through daily support of shop floor operations. Responsibilities include investigating and implementing improvements to existing manufacturing processes, trouble shooting of processing, supporting equipment qualification, training manufacturing operators and staff on processing techniques, and introducing new technologies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains a safe working environment by complying with all safety and environmental policies. Advocates for and promotes a safe work environment by reporting near misses and/or other safety and environmental hazards, wearing required PPE, and encouraging others to do the same.
- Leads investigations and implementations of continuous improvement projects for manufacturing processes focusing on equipment and processing.
- Interfaces with Quality, Logistics, Maintenance, Product Engineering to assure timely production support.
- Optimizes manufacturing processes including production flow, machining/assembly methods, manning plans, tooling and production equipment for safety, quality and efficiency.
- Develops, maintains and continuously improves standardized operating instructions.
- Works with Manufacturing Process Planning (MPP) to ensure a successful handoff.
- Provides training on work instructions, changeovers, preventative maintenance, and related topics to operators and technicians as needed.
- Consults with Product Engineering to determine optimum tooling and processes.
- Plans and implements workplace layouts to optimize process, material flow and efficiency.
- Works with Maintenance for preventive maintenance planning and spare parts planning to ensure equipment efficiency.
- Investigates new manufacturing techniques to continually improve processes.
- Leads cross-functional teams to create and maintain PFMEA.
- Analyzes OEE, production downtime root causes and provides recommendations for productivity improvements.
- Leads end-to-end integration of new products into the specialized manufacturing platform, including process development, design for manufacturability, and cross-functional coordination to minimize disruption to current production.
- Designs, validates and sustains specialized tooling and production equipment; collaborates with maintenance and operations to drive reliability improvements and preventative strategies.
- Provides rapid-response technical support for unplanned downtime, applying root cause analysis and driving corrective/preventive actions to improve line stability.
- Owns manufacturing readiness for new product launches by validating processes, conducting pilot builds, and scaling production with robust controls ensuring quality, safety, and delivery targets are met without disruption to current output.
- Establishes and grows specialized engineering expertise in product technologies, standardizing best practices, mentoring peers, and reducing organizational risk while building long-term sustainability and capacity.
Qualifications & Experience
- Considerable manufacturing engineering experience with strong knowledge of automated assembly processes.
- Working knowledge of 2D & 3D CAD software.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Solid understanding of Lean Principles (5S, Kaizen, Kanban, SMED).
- Experience coordinating and presenting technical data to suppliers and customers.
- Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
- Proven ability to read and interpret customer specifications and industry standards.
- Self-starter who can work without day-to-day direction.
- Strong project management skills with ability to plan, monitor and control a project from start to finish.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; able to work independently when needed.
- Strong analytical ability with data-driven problem solving and root cause analysis.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and blueprints.
- Highly organized and capable of working independently or as part of a team.
- Demonstrates integrity and accountability; maintains high performance standards.
- Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
- Experience developing work processes to improve outcomes for the team and customers.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; equivalent training and experience considered.
