The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Shift: 1 - 5:30am to 2:00pm.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance. Physical presence is expected as part of a reliable and predictable pattern of attendance.
  • Support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan.
  • Engage in civility, respect, and professionalism.
  • Maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors, vacuums and shampoos carpets as applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces as assigned; removes and disposes of waste daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of the facility, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, changing toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture.
  • Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, including mowing, weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate.
  • Opens or closes and secures the facility, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off lights, and ensures grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew; cooperates in group situations; exhibits tact and consideration, displays a positive outlook and pleasant manner, offers assistance and support to co-workers, and works actively to resolve conflicts.
  • Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy.
  • Possesses basic working English language skills.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience: One year of increasingly responsible experience in large-scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Writes simple correspondence. Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations. Must possess basic working English language skills.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: All new and current employees are highly encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Mathematical Skills: Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions. Deals with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • Computer Skills: Internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as appropriate.

Physical Demands

  • Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting/smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Lifting Demands: Up to 55 pounds; over 55 pounds requires a 2-person lift.
  • Reaching Activities: Both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.
  • Environmental Conditions: Noise level moderate; exposure to extreme temperatures, wet/humid conditions, cleaning chemicals (wear eye protection), vibration/impact, proximity to moving mechanical parts, and exposure to electrical shock, fumes, or airborne particles.
