The Norfolk Community Services Board (NCSB) provides treatment, support, and education to the community with a focus on mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and housing and homelessness. Norfolk CSB provides services to persons in acute crisis as well as integrated, person-centered, and recovery-oriented programming for persons needing assistance and support stabilizing in the community.

Today, the NCSB provides treatment and rehabilitation services to over 6,000 Norfolk citizens yearly. The NCSB is seeking Custodians in their Homeless & Housing division. The Custodian of a homeless shelter is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors. Duties include performing daily cleaning and sanitization tasks, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, conducting basic maintenance, and supporting the shelter's overall operations. The custodian plays a vital role in creating a dignified and respectful space for individuals experiencing homelessness, contributing to the shelter's mission of providing care and support.

Department Hiring Range Salary: $40, 688-$46,791

Essential functions

  • Clean and disinfect common areas, sleeping quarters, kitchens, and offices. Clean and disinfect restrooms, shower stalls, and day rooms. Replenish paper product , soaps, and other supplies. Wash windows, walls, windowsills, mirrors and doors.
  • Dispose of trash and recyclables following established protocols.
  • Maintain exterior of facility by cleaning and sweeping outdoor common areas, walkways and grounds, and picking up trash and debris.
  • Report significant maintenance issues or safety hazards to the Program Administrator.
  • Maintain compliance with local health and sanitation codes.
  • Track supplies and notify supervisors as supplies are running low.
  • Back up support with special assignments such as moving furniture, unloading supplies, running errands, and maintaining inventory.
  • Emergency weather operations by assisting with pre and post storm treatment for ice, snow, and storm debris.
  • Work collaboratively with shelter staff to address resident needs and maintain the facility's functionality.
  • Respond promptly to emergency cleaning requests.

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to not less than high school or equivalency.

No experience required.

Preferred Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED.

1 year of custodial experience is preferred.

  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record preferred.

Working Hours: Shifts vary to meet the needs of the program. Each position shift is 40 hours per week. Typical shift would be 7:30 am - 4:OO pm or 12:30 pm - 9:OO pm, 5 days per week.
