Overview

The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance; physical presence is expected as part of a reliable pattern of attendance.
  • Support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan.
  • Engage in civility, respect, and professionalism.
  • Maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnish floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets as applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all surfaces; removes waste daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, changing toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture.
  • Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program (mowing, weed control, edging, trimming, fertilizing, plant replacement, mulching, cleaning sidewalks/curbs, watering, etc.).
  • Opens or closes and secures the facility, including gates, doors, and alarm systems; turns on/off lights; responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew; cooperates in group settings; exhibits tact and consideration; displays a positive outlook and pleasant manner; offers assistance and support to co-workers.
  • Assumes modified duties of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy.
  • Possess basic working English language skills.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large-scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: All new and current employees are encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; writes simple correspondence; effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations; basic working English language skills.
  • Mathematical Skills: Add and subtract two-digit numbers; multiply and divide with tens and hundreds; apply to money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions; deals with standardized situations with limited variables.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with the HCPS internal email system and district website.

Physical Demands

  • Physical activities: standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, and vision (depth, color, and field of view).
  • Lifting: Up to 55 pounds; over 55 pounds requires two people.
  • Reaching: Both hands; overhead.
  • Environmental Conditions: Noise level; extreme temperatures; wet/humid conditions; exposure to cleaning chemicals (eye protection recommended); vibration/impact; operation of heavy equipment; moving mechanical parts; exposure to electrical shock; fumes or airborne particles.

  • Dependability: Respond to requests for service and direction; take responsibility for actions; follow attendance guidelines.

  • Personal Appearance: Dress appropriately; maintain grooming; wear district-provided uniform.
  • Safety and Security: Follow safety procedures; report unsafe conditions; use equipment properly.
  • Teamwork: Contribute to a positive team environment and support colleagues.
