Overview
Custodian — Facilities and Custodial Maintenance
Location: Tacoma, WA; Pierce County Library System (Gig Harbor, Key Center and other locations as assigned). Status: Regular, Part-time; Hours per week: 10. FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-exempt. Union Status: Non-represented.
Hiring Range: $20.51 - $23.78 per hour; Pay Grade Range: $20.51 - $28.40 per hour.
Compensation: Pierce County Library System offers a compensation program recognizing qualifications and experience relevant to the position. The starting pay is typically within the hiring range based on experience, with annual increases for each additional year of experience and tenure up to the maximum in the pay grade range. Overtime eligibility applies to positions which are FLSA non-exempt.
Schedule notes: This Custodian position provides coverage for PCLS locations during the shift times below. A PCLS fleet vehicle may be provided for work travel between assigned worksites when available. Coverage could float to any of 19 PCLS branch locations (travel to Anderson Island not assigned). If using a personal vehicle for work travel, reimbursement is provided per policy at current rates when traveling between branches during shifts. Schedule is subject to change.
Position Summary
Performs a variety of routine custodial functions for the Pierce County Library System; cleans and maintains assigned buildings, facilities, and/or office areas; and performs other related duties as assigned. This is an entry-level position in the Custodial job series. Works under close supervision and performs basic custodial tasks.
Essential Functions
- Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.
- Disinfects, cleans, and maintains restroom facilities; restocks paper products.
- Cleans library, offices, work areas, meeting rooms, study rooms, coffee bars, and staff lunch room.
- Sanitizes drinking fountains, kitchen sinks, countertops, microwaves, table tops, and desks.
- Vacuums, sweeps, mops, and cleans hard surface floors; spot cleans carpets.
- Dusts fixtures, furniture, and other hard surface areas.
- Cleans internal and external building windows.
- Empties trash cans and recycling bins; disposes of trash properly.
- Sets up and takes down meeting rooms.
- Assists with routine building maintenance tasks including changing light bulbs, cleaning exterior areas, and monitoring parking lots.
- Demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance.
- Communicates Library policies to the public in job-related contacts.
- Reflects Pierce County Library’s mission, vision, and values to the public and staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Requirements including Education, License or Certifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and six months custodial experience; OR any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skills.
- A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
- Must pass criminal background screening prior to hire.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule and adapt to schedule changes on short notice.
- Custodial functions and principles; custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals; safety practices; customer service standards and protocols.
- Performing a variety of routine custodial functions and ensuring facilities are cleaned and maintained; completing work orders timely.
- Safely operating custodial equipment and handling cleaning chemicals.
Technology Requirements:
- Basic electronic record creation and storage navigation (e.g., timecard/HRIS, performance reviews, network drive storage).
- Use of basic office equipment; basic keyboard and data entry; Windows navigation; connect and print; basic web navigation and following technical instructions.
- Desirable: Basic MS Office Suite skills; experience with Integrated Library System or Data Management systems.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work is in a normal office/library environment with occasional lifting up to 35 pounds; may lift or push up to 50 pounds with assistance. Regular contact with the public and exposure to cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials. Safety practices observed at all times.
