Custodian Job at Vanderbilt University in Nashville

The Custodian is part of Vanderbilt University Maintenance and Operations (VUMO) and is responsible for performing general housekeeping and cleaning duties across various buildings on the Vanderbilt University campus. This role ensures the campus remains pristine and presentable for students, staff, and visitors. The position reports directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor.

About the Work Unit:

VUMO provides facilities support for construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of university spaces; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet; grounds care for 330 acres; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and Medical Center. The facilities' annual budget exceeds $100 million and includes over 400 employees, managing major capital projects and maintenance expenditures.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

1. Perform cleaning duties such as emptying trash, dusting, polishing furniture, washing windows and walls, cleaning restrooms, and replenishing supplies.
2. Inspect areas for cleanliness and mechanical issues.
3. Report maintenance needs to supervisors.
4. Maintain custodial supplies inventory and request replenishments.
5. Operate lights and equipment as needed.
6. Clean appliances, plumbing fixtures, and waterless urinals.
7. Dispense cleaning chemicals and respond to custodial emergencies.
8. Clean floors, move furniture for cleaning, and clean light fixtures.
9. Deliver supplies across campus and handle trash and recyclables.
10. Remove snow from building entrances.
11. Support custodial needs during events.
12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities and reports to the Housekeeping Supervisor.

Education and Certifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid Driver's License required with a satisfactory driving record.

Experience and Skills:

• Previous custodial or housekeeping experience is preferred but not required.
• Experience in higher education is preferred.
• A customer service-oriented attitude is essential.
