Position Information
Under the direction of the Facilities Services Custodial Supervisor, the Lead Custodian leads and guides by executing and performing a variety of custodial/housekeeping tasks. The Lead Custodian is responsible to maintain, disinfect, sanitize, and preserve the campus throughout the University of California, Riverside. In addition, the Lead Custodian acts as a subject matter expert and provides leadership to custodial staff who perform such tasks as: clean, dust, strip, wax, sweep, mop, polish, vacuum, replenish restrooms, and remove refuse/recycling throughout campus facilities, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, exteriors, etc. This position my work independently or as part of a team in assigned work areas. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students. The full salary range for the Lead Custodian position is $20.05 - $27.51 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements. ***Please note the minimum pay for this position will be $25 an hour, per AFSCME agreement as of June 22, 2025.***

- Knowledge, skill and ability to safely use of cleaning chemicals and understand their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods.
- Knowledge, skill and ability to apply and practice proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including, but not limited to resilient tile floors, carpeted floors and terrazzo floors.
- Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled and emergency overtime.
- Ability to perform heavy/physically demanding tasks which require pushing, pulling, walking, standing, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, stretching, reaching above shoulder level and lifting up to 75 pounds. Ability to safely remove and replace heavy linen carts, refuse/recycling dumpsters from a loading dock routinely using a manual or mechanical cart/equipment.
- Ability to work indoors or outdoors with variable temperatures and conditions; including dust, smog, rain or temperatures ranging from high heat with humidity to cold conditions.
- The ability to work with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service.
- Basic knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected; knowledge of safe and proper methods to clean up and dispose of biohazards and chemicals such as rodent droppings, vomit, blood, raw sewage or chemicals.
- Ability to read and understand the proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB-198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).
- Knowledge of UCR/UC policies, procedures and systems.
- Knowledge and ability to use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices.
- Knowledge and skill to use MS Office programs and email.

Under the direction of the Facilities Services Custodial Supervisor, the Lead Custodian independently performs various custodial/housekeeping tasks, supports the operational workflow as a leader, is a subject matter expert, and may support the staff with training. The Lead Custodian is responsible for maintaining, disinfecting, sanitizing, and preserving the buildings throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. This position may work independently or as part of a team in assigned work areas and supports critical day-to-day operations in the supervisor's absence at the direction of the Custodial Manager.
