Primary responsibilities include providing highly complex custodial work, cleaning and sanitizing buildings and resident homes, stocking supplies, and supporting safety and infection control programs. Supervisory duties may include oversight of Custodian I and II staff and training/coaching as needed.
The essential duties emphasize regular attendance, adherence to schedules, use of cleaning chemicals, waste disposal, and ensuring cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control standards across buildings and resident units.
Responsibilities
- Perform highly complex (senior level) custodial work including cleaning, sanitizing, and housekeeping in state supported living center buildings and resident homes.
- Order and restock supplies and equipment; provide backup to other custodians as needed.
- Inspect buildings and equipment, identify problems, and ensure follow-up actions are completed.
- Coordinate and perform cleaning of restrooms, offices, programming areas, residents’ homes, bedrooms, and other areas; manage waste collection and disposal.
- Maintain cleanliness to meet minimum standard guidelines for cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control.
- Assist Custodian Manager with safety and infection control programs; oversee Custodian I and II staff as needed; provide training and coaching.
- Participate in disaster response, COOP activation, and may require alternate shift patterns.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques (dusting, sweeping, mopping) and floor techniques (stripping and waxing).
- Knowledge of cleaning/restroom disinfection; inventory control principles.
- Skill in handling custodial materials/chemicals and operating cleaning equipment; ability to maintain building maintenance tools.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; stay on task and complete work timely; lift up to 50 pounds; stand/walk for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and residents; flexible with hours; ability to work irregular hours.
Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications
- Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days of hire; out-of-state drivers must provide a certified driving record as per HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening Criteria
- Graduation from standard senior high school or equivalent preferred.
- At least six (6) months paid custodial/housekeeping experience required; one (1) year preferred.
- One (1) year experience in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders preferred.
Additional Information
- Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct/HHS LEIE).
