Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervisor, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, maintains equipment in functional condition, and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, staff, teachers, administrators, visitors, and others, as necessary. May help with building security by locking/unlocking doors when requested and do final lock-up of building at night including turning on security systems. Assigned work week and shift may vary. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
  • Checks and secures building at the beginning and end of shift for safety and cleanliness.
  • Cleans rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, sills, and touchpoints.
  • Maintains, cleans, and sanitizes restrooms.
  • Fills soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
  • Mops or operates auto scrubber.
  • Extracts/bonnets carpets; assists with floor refinishing.
  • Removes garbage.
  • Maintains grounds (mowing and edging lawns, removing snow/ice/debris, weeding, raking, watering, sweeping).
  • Removes graffiti and repairs vandalism as needed.
  • Cleans up, repairs furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment.
  • Performs minor repairs to windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, equipment, appliances, sinks, and toilets; may assemble new equipment and furniture.
  • Prepares and sets up rooms for meetings and activities; cleans up afterwards.
  • Maintains swimming pools including chemical maintenance as outlined.
  • Helps maintain and operate mechanical systems.
  • Assists in restricting access by locking/unlocking doors and securing the building after hours.
  • Attends required apprenticeship classes and completes demonstrations and competency logs.
  • Performs duties to maintain an 80% or higher VEKTR inspection score.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Operates and maintains basic cleaning equipment (buffers, extractors, auto scrubber).
  • Performs minor adjustments to equipment and understands basic use of cleaning solvents and their proper application.
  • Understanding of emergency procedures (shelter in place, lockdown, fire and earthquake drills).
  • Ability to follow oral and written requests from supervisor.
  • Basic reading and math skills.

Required Education and Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Prior Experience

One year of full-time custodial experience is required.

Assigned Decision Making

Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned by supervisors. Takes direction well and works within guidelines. Makes suggestions but is willing to follow directions.

Interactions With Others

Interacts positively with students, teachers, principals, custodians, and other district personnel. May interact with parents, counselors, and police agencies as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibility

May supervise and provide assistance to hourly custodial employees.

Working Environment

Works inside and outside the building. Conditions may include hot or cold weather. Hazards may exist when using power equipment, ladders, scaffolds, mopping, buffers on wet floors, and when handling cleaners. May experience interruptions and stress from student activity. Must receive proper training for handling cleaning chemicals.

Physical Requirements

  • Speak and hear; stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally climb or balance.
  • Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods and lift/move up to 100 lbs.
