Overview
This position is open until filled. The Custodian 1 works under general supervision, performing a variety of routine custodial and general maintenance tasks to maintain cleanliness, care, and access to college facilities. This position reports to the Custodial Services Manager. Regular and consistent attendance is required. Essential Functions
- Clean and sanitize showers, restrooms and locker rooms in accordance with established procedures and standards; keep areas properly supplied with toilet paper, paper towels, soap and other items.
- Clean whiteboards and erasers.
- Perform high and low dusting.
- Polish furniture and metal fixtures.
- Sweep, mop and vacuum floors and rugs.
- Empty trash and recycle containers.
- Follow written and verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies and equipment.
- Follow MSDS chemical handling and use instructions.
- Use PPE as required.
- Spot and Deep Cleaning: Strip, neutralize, buff and apply floor finish; vacuum and extract carpets; operate hi-speed burnishers and low speed polishers/scrubbers and bathroom pressure washers; wash interior and exterior windows; properly use and care for assigned hand and power equipment needed for the cleaning and preservation of floors, walls, windows, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Routine Housekeeping Assignments: Set-up, take down and move furniture for cleaning and facility maintenance and, as necessary, for events; clean and move 90 gallon co-mingle recycle totes; operate recycling and trash compactors; operate utility carts; inspect and maintain eye wash stations; launder reusable cleaning materials; operate radios to maintain communication with co-workers and supervisor; maintain security of assigned keys; secure interior doors upon completion of cleaning assignments; keep building entry doors secured during unoccupied hours; observe and report suspicious activity; conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of custodial equipment.
- Inventory and Equipment: Be accountable for assigned equipment and submit requests for equipment repairs to the supervisor immediately; maintain inventory of consumables such as chemicals and paper products and submit consumables order needs to the supervisor in a timely manner to avoid running out of stock.
- Non-Routine Duties: Remove snow and ice from building entrances and walkways; respond to and perform emergency functions; perform other related custodial and minor maintenance and repair work as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education Required: High school diploma or GED.
- Experience Required: One (1) year of experience in custodial work, or commercial housekeeping, working in commercial facilities or buildings.
- Special Requirements: Consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment. Information from the background check will be considered in determining suitability.

Terms of Employment
- Full-time (40 hours per week) classified, overtime-eligible position, permanent after a 6-month probationary period. Primary work location: Pierce College, Fort Steilacoom campus. Occasional travel between campuses.
- Work hours: Monday through Thursday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM; Friday 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM; occasional evenings and weekend work. Shift premium of $2.50 per hour for shifts with majority time between 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
Salary & Benefits
Starting salary: $3,317.00 to $3,728.00 per month, with increments up to $3,811.00 per month. Benefits package valued at about 30% of salary, including medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance, vacation, sick and personal leave, reduced tuition, and retirement benefits.
