Summary:

The Custodian/Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. While responsible for general custodial duties as needed, this position is also tasked with performing a variety of light maintenance activities such as changing light bulbs, unclogging sinks and toilets, replacing ceiling tiles, and assisting with HVAC filter changes. This role requires a dependable professional with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve minor facility issues quickly and safely. Flexibility is essential, as the Custodian/Maintenance Technician may be asked to support cleaning, event setups, or respond to urgent requests throughout the day.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and other school spaces.
  • Perform routine cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal.
  • Operate and maintain janitorial equipment such as auto scrubbers, burnishers, buffers, swing machines, and carpet extractors (training provided).
  • Perform floor care duties including stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet extraction as needed.
  • Clean glass surfaces, whiteboards, and fixtures to ensure a polished, welcoming environment.
  • Assist with event setup and breakdown including moving furniture and staging spaces.
  • Replenish supplies and maintain cleaning inventory; report any shortages or equipment issues to the supervisor.
  • Secure school facilities by locking doors, windows, and checking access points as needed.
  • Follow all cleaning safety procedures and chemical handling protocols.
  • Conduct basic light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, changing HVAC filters, unclogging toilets and sinks, and replacing ceiling tiles. *This list is not all-inclusive; additional maintenance responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the school.
  • Assist with seasonal exterior maintenance as needed (e.g., snow removal, leaf cleanup).
  • Promptly report any facility issues, safety hazards, or repair needs to the Site Manager/Supervisor or Facilities Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support school operations and ensure a clean, safe, and functional environment.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior experience (1-4 years) in custodial or janitorial work, ideally in a school, institutional, or similar environment.
  • Floor care experience (stripping, waxing, burnishing, carpet extraction, etc.) is strongly preferred, but not required - training will be provided for qualified candidates.
  • Familiarity with basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, unclogging drains, and performing minor HVAC upkeep.
  • Ability to operate and maintain janitorial equipment (e.g., auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, buffers).
  • Working knowledge of cleaning products, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to cleanliness and facility upkeep.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
  • Must pass a background check as required by the school district.
