Madera County Superintendent of Schools

CUSTODIAN

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of tasks involving general cleaning and routine repairs and maintenance of buildings and grounds. The primary responsibility of this classification is to provide students and/or staff with a clean, safe, attractive, and efficient place in which to learn and work. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from an assigned administrator and work on a regular basis within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  • Dust and clean classrooms and offices; wash walls, woodwork, and other surfaces; and wash windows and door glass.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Wash and sanitize sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, and fixtures.
  • Replenish paper supplies, soap dispensers, and storage areas.
  • Empty trash receptacles and dispose of trash.
  • Routinely inspect buildings and grounds to ensure proper maintenance and safety.
  • Move, arrange, and set up classroom and office equipment, supplies, and furniture.
  • May maintain exterior grounds, including mowing and edging of lawns.
  • May use hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from landscaped areas.
  • May oversee the work of student assistants.
  • Maintain security and safety of buildings. May assist building administrators in working with special groups who use the building during off hours.
  • May arm and/or disarm intrusion alarm systems. Respond as necessary to intrusion and/or farm alarm systems or due to emergency situations.
  • Attend staff and inservice training meetings.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of: Methods, supplies, tools, and equipment used in custodial work; safety regulations and safe work practices; proper hygiene practices and procedures; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; interpersonal skills; and data collection and organization.
  • Ability to: Use supplies, tools, and equipment safely and effectively; make minor repairs; operate hand and power tools; climb ladders; work outside normal hours in response to alarms or emergencies; train student assistants; work at any employer location; maintain confidentiality; communicate effectively orally and in writing; interact with students, parents, staff, and the public; work with diverse groups; and collaborate to contribute to a positive working environment.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses and Other Requirements

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment. May occasionally work in extreme weather conditions and be exposed to noise and fumes from equipment operation. May be required to drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Demands

Perform strenuous physical work in lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, moving, and controlling heavy objects; dexterity of hands and fingers; hearing and speaking to exchange information; sitting or standing for extended periods; seeing to read materials; reaching overhead and above the shoulders; bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching. Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties in a safe and effective manner for self and others.

Selection Procedure
