Lead Custodian

Job Summary

The Lead Custodian ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across campus facilities. This is a dual-role position: performing custodial work while also supervising student workers and part-time staff. The role requires hands-on cleaning, staff scheduling, quality inspections, and training while modeling professionalism and teamwork. The successful candidate will be dependable, detail-oriented, and able to motivate others in alignment with the College's mission and values.

Education & Experience
  • Previous experience in custodial services, housekeeping, or facilities maintenance required.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Training in floor care, chemical handling, or safety practices (OSHA, bloodborne pathogens) is an advantage.
Licensure & Requirements
  • Valid driver's license preferred
  • Ability to pass required safety training (chemical handling, PPE use, hazard communication).
Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to train, motivate, and supervise student and part-time workers.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment operation, and safe chemical use.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to provide clear direction.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and adjust to changing needs.
  • Physical ability to perform custodial tasks: lift up to 50 lbs., bend, kneel, stand for extended periods, and work in varied conditions (heat, cold, noise, cleaning chemicals).

Essential Duties

Custodial (Hands-On)
  • Perform cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting, and restroom sanitation.
  • Operate custodial equipment (floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, buffers).
  • Clean windows, surfaces, furniture, and fixtures; collect and dispose of trash and recycling.
  • Respond quickly to spills, hazards, and urgent custodial needs.
Supervisory & Leadership
  • Lead, train, and schedule student workers and part-time staff.
  • Provide instruction on safe and effective cleaning practices.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure work meets established standards.
  • Monitor attendance and performance, offering coaching and feedback.
  • Assist with hiring and onboarding new staff.
Administrative & Compliance
  • Maintain supply inventory and request replenishment as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, SDS requirements, and College safety procedures.
  • Report facility maintenance needs promptly to the Director of Facilities.
  • Maintain records for timekeeping, inspections, and supply use.
