Hiring Range: $42,452 - $45,038 per year. Full Range: $42,452 - $55,391 per year.

Schedule: Monday - Friday: 7:00am - 4:00pm, 40 hours per week/12 months per year. District Funded

Summary: Performs a variety of work in connection with the custodial, grounds, and material support of campus classroom, multi-use, office, or related facilities. The Custodian-Groundskeeper requires competency in several areas including, maintenance of grounds and facilities, and including landscape and horticultural skills to layout, contour, construct, and maintain special areas, fields, turf management, and irrigation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleans, dusts, and disinfects restrooms including floors, stalls, toilets, urinals, and fixtures. Cleans lockers and showers. Removes trash and waste. Cleans trash receptacles and replaces liners.
  • Cleans public entry and use areas including, but not limited to hallways, stairways, elevators, cafes, and meeting rooms. Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, door handles, and door push plates. Sweeps and uses a dust mop on hard floors and baseboards, spot cleaning as necessary and wet mopping on a regularly scheduled basis. Vacuums and spot clean carpeted areas.
  • Performs regularly scheduled cleaning of classroom, laboratory, and office areas. Empties pencil sharpeners, erases chalkboards and dry-erase boards and cleans chalk trays and erasers. Cleans entryway floor mats, and dusts furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Maintains safe and clean walkway and grounds surrounding the area of assignment. Picks up litter. Empties and cleans outdoor trash and receptacles.
  • Maintains safe and clean specialty areas, as assigned. Steam cleans automotive shop steam rack.
  • Ensures that towel, soap, cleanser, and other dispensers are adequately stocked.
  • On a regular schedule, cleans and washes desks, tables, counters, furniture and fixtures, inside/outside walls and ceilings, mirrors, ledges, bookshelves, and other related items. Periodically oils or polishes woodwork, paneling, wood furniture, and metal fixtures.
  • Cleans, washes, and dusts windows, window coverings and light fixtures.
  • Strips, seals, and refinish hard floors per regular schedule. Disinfects, scrubs, wet vacuum, and buff hard floors. Steam/dry cleans and shampoos carpets and fabric furniture. Cleans tiled areas.
  • Selects, plants, prunes, and trims trees, ornamental plants, shrubs, and ground covers to accomplish landscaping objectives.
  • Removes weeds, blows, rakes, and removes trash and debris from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking. Mows, grooms, and replants lawn areas. Fertilizes turf and various landscaped areas. Maintains in-ground drains and culverts.
  • Installs new landscaping by cultivating and renovating areas and installing or replacing turf, trees, ornamental plants, shrubs, ground covers, annuals, and bulbs.
  • Secures entry and exit doors, ensuring that windows and lights are locked and off. Activates security alarms, notifying occupants when the building is closing.
  • Ensures that secondary containers for cleaning and other products are properly labeled. Ensures that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for assigned area(s) are up to date.
  • Stakes, prunes, thins, and transplants turf, trees, ornamental plants, shrubs, ground covers, annuals, and bulbs. Levels, cuts, fill, trenches, and excavate grounds with tractors and other rolling stock.
  • Maintains athletic fields, areas, surfaces, and outdoor classrooms in a safe and usable condition. Removes graffiti from assigned areas. Mows, grooms, contours, paints, and lines athletic and public use play fields to comply with required dimensions.
  • Inspects equipment for function and required servicing. Makes minor repairs and arranges for complex repairs.
  • Sets calibration on tank sprayers, drop spreaders, and wheel-driven spreaders.
  • Applies fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides to areas, as authorized. Places postings where pesticides are being applied. Disposes of product containers per applicable environmental regulations. Applies biological/organic controls for pests and weeds.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of safe pesticide/herbicide application.
  • Completes work order requests for maintenance services, as necessary. Checks time sheets of hours worked by student and/or other temporary help, as assigned. Completes departmental forms for internal use.
  • Documents work activities, inspections, unanticipated occurrences, and MSD sheets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the objectives of the position.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

The position requires a working knowledge of the practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in a building maintenance specialty such as painting or carpentry. Requires basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing repair procedures. Requires a thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial care and facilities maintenance. The position requires a working knowledge of turf management and maintenance practices and techniques, including those for athletic fields. Requires a working knowledge of horticulture and methods of planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, trees, and lawns. Requires knowledge of the operating characteristics of a full range of grounds maintenance equipment. Requires a thorough knowledge of the buildings and grounds of the assigned site. Must have a full knowledge of work hazards and safe work techniques, including lifting procedures. Requires some knowledge of chemical reactions and proper safety precautions for use. Requires a working knowledge of safe forklift operation. Requires sufficient reading and writing ability to read work instructions and document work activity onto standardized forms. Requires sufficient human relations skill to exercise courtesy when dealing with others.

Requires the ability to perform all essential duties of the position with limited supervision. Must be able to observe all safety precautions and procedures. Must be able to operate and maintain tools and equipment in a working condition. Requires the ability to perform maintenance tasks and to be able to determine when to refer more complex maintenance requirements to a supervisor. Requires the ability to plant, cultivate, prune, and care for plants, trees, and lawns. Requires the ability to use herbicides and pesticides safely and effectively. Requires the ability to perform sidewalk repairs. Must be able to maintain lawns, athletic fields, and gardens. Must be able to identify turf and other plant diseases and pests and take steps to mitigate or eradicate. Must have the ability to give general work training and guidance to Custodians, students, or temporary workers. Must be able communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively. Must be able to apply District policies and procedures. Must be able to respond to emergencies.

Physical abilities

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature. Requires the ability to maintain cardiovascular fitness to engage in strenuous physical labor. Requires near visual acuity to write, to read directions and product labels, and to observe work in progress. Requires sufficient hearing and speech for ordinary, telephonic, and 2-way radio communication, to hear sound prompts from equipment, and to determine if equipment is functioning properly. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write and to clean and make minor repairs. Requires the ability to lift (from overhead, waist and floor levels, max. 50 lbs.), carry (max. 50 lbs.), push, pull, bend, squat, reach (from low, level, and overhead), and twist and turn head and trunk to clean and to remove trash, move furniture and equipment. Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

Education and experience

The position typically requires a High School diploma or GED, three years of prior custodial including one year of groundskeeping assignments.

Licenses and certificates

Valid California Class C or higher driver's license. Forklift Certificate. Hazardous Materials Awareness Training Card. Asbestos Awareness Training Certificate. Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Program Certificate.
