Creates and maintains ongoing awareness among claim file handlers to recognize "red flags" in claim cases, leading to the detection, investigation, and mitigation of potentially fraudulent or inflated claims. Performs various duties to resolve, compromise, deny, or prosecute fraudulent claims. Responsible for assigning independent contractors for antifraud investigations and controlling costs associated with contracted activities.
The preferred location for this position is in the Fresno/Bakersfield area and surrounding cities.
What You’ll Do:
As a Special Investigator, you will conduct basic to moderately complex investigations on potentially suspect or inflated auto, workers’ compensation, and commercial claims. This includes compiling and analyzing information from internal and external sources, conducting interviews, hiring independent contractors, and referring claims to law enforcement as needed.
- Investigate claims across all lines of business, including scene investigations, recorded statements, and assigning contractors.
- Analyze data and verify the legitimacy of documents to make suspect claims decisions in compliance with laws.
- Conduct interviews and examinations under oath with insureds, claimants, and witnesses for suspicious claims.
- Maintain detailed investigation notes, prepare reports, and recommend actions including law enforcement referrals.
- Communicate with fraud agencies such as NICB, FBI, and others.
- Share non-confidential findings with claim staff regarding suspicious claims.
- Represent the company in court as a witness on suspected fraudulent claims.
- Encourage claim staff to combat fraud through various motivational techniques.
What it Takes:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; degrees in Police Science, Criminal Justice are beneficial.
- At least 2 years of related experience, 4+ preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish and English is preferred.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Experience in law enforcement, claims handling, or criminal investigation is preferred.
- Strong investigative skills and effective communication with claim staff and law enforcement.
- Proficiency with computer software and adaptability to new technologies.

- Salary range in California: $76,728 - $105,501 annually.
