The Senior Sustaining Engineer is responsible for leveraging change management and good problem solving principles to plan and lead strategic projects, primarily related to operating margin expansion and business continuity. They will specifically manage the engineering portion of the welding certification program.
This position reports to the Director of Sustaining Engineering and is part of the Global Operations Engineering team located in Cortland, NY, USA and will be an on-site role.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the welding control portion of the Quality Control Manual, including Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ), in-process welding inspections, and Welding Material Control in accordance with ASME BPVC Section IX. Supervise, control, evaluate, and accept welding qualification testing/record keeping.
- Monitor welding productivity, troubleshoot welding issues, recommend and implement welding process improvements, and optimize welding performance.
- Solve complex problems, write and execute Qualification Master Plans (QMPs) on microelectronic components, and exercise good judgement based on data.
- Execute and lead engineering solutions to drive operational margin expansion.
Qualifications
- Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) certification minimum; Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer (CWENG) preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, MET, Welding Engineering or similar) with typically >4 years of experience in a welding certification role.
- Active participation in structured problem solving (DMAIC, PSP, VRK, etc.) and data-driven decision making.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, at all organizational levels.
- Ability to establish and follow an organized work structure and project management with clear actions, dates, and accountability (daily management, Project VPM, etc.).
Travel, Driver’s License & Physical/Environment Requirements
- Travel up to 10%
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to lift/move/carry equipment up to 50 lb
Desired experience
- SAP or similar ERP system
- Minitab, JMP or similar data analysis tools
- Strong Microsoft Excel and presentation skills
- CNC machining experience (programming, troubleshooting)
