Overview

The Dual Coating & Welding Inspector acts as both a Welding Inspector and a Coating Inspector on pipeline construction projects. The role ensures welding procedures are qualified and utilized, radiographers are certified, welders are qualified, and welds are sound with proper documentation. Coating inspection covers contractor work quality in accordance with client policies and procedures for steel pipe and fittings, per Company specifications and approved construction drawings. The position requires an active AWS CWI/NACE Level 1 certification and is expected to last 3 – 6 months.

Job Location

Location: US-IL-Naperville. Onsite work with potential travel to project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with approved construction drawings and Company specifications.
  • Understand the Contract documents as they relate to duties on the project.
  • Inspect other contractors\\' work for compliance with permit and one-call requirements; verbally communicate deviations to the Chief Inspector and Company, followed by formal written documentation the same day.
  • Have a basic understanding of welding techniques, positions, consumables, weld preparation and drawing requirements; maintain a detailed inspector\\'s log book.
  • Complete and submit inspection reports describing work performed so welds can be identified per current standards.
  • Promote safety on the job site and report safety issues to the Construction Manager, Chief Inspector and Safety Inspector.
  • Plan and organize inspection duties in advance.
  • Discuss design changes or material substitutions with the Construction Manager and obtain proper Company approval.
  • Verify materials used comply with Company requirements.
  • Inform the Chief Inspector of daily or anticipated project problems.
  • Understand the relationship between quality assurance, quality control and inspection procedures.
  • Ensure welding procedures are established and each welder is qualified for the work performed.
  • Monitor weld quality to ensure sound welds at all joints.
  • Ensure repairs to correct weld defects meet requirements per codes and Company specifications.
  • Verify welding materials are appropriate, stored correctly, and not damaged.
  • Witness hydrostatic testing, verify calibration papers are attached to test reports.
  • Before backfills, HDDs, or jack-and-bores, visually inspect pipe coating, gouges, dents, and imperfections; ensure coatings are repaired to spec and pipe is jeepsed as required.
  • After curing, verify field-applied pipe coatings meet thickness and hardness specifications; inspect shrink sleeves or protective products for proper installation.
  • Coordinate with other survey crews to verify as-builts; ensure proper padding, bedding, and safe rigging/lowering of the pipe.
  • After HDDs, verify coatings and weld joints were not damaged during pull-through activities.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in engineering or technology with five (5) years of natural gas/petroleum pipeline construction and/or inspection experience, and completed Company Welding Inspection training and AWS CWI certification as required by level.
  • Or a high school diploma or equivalent plus at least five (5) years of practical welding experience, five years in natural gas/petroleum pipeline construction and/or inspection, and completed Company internal CWI training.
  • Level 1 – Qualified: five years related experience and completed internal Company High Pressure Welding training.
  • Level 2 – Certified: five years related experience with AWS CWI certification.
  • Level 3 – Dual Cert: five+ years related experience with AWS CWI and NACE 1 or 2; experience inspecting field-applied pipeline coatings; familiarity with Gas Standard 182.0052; familiarity with DOT 192 and OSHA regulations.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; proficient with Word and Excel; ability to read and implement the Company OPM and attachments; ability to read construction drawings and translate to field constructability.

Wage Data

This role will pay $50.49 an hour depending on experience.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • Construction sites and/or client Right-of-Way
  • Client testing facility (occasional) and corporate offices (occasional)
  • Reports to the Chief Inspector; may require extensive driving to reach job sites
  • Frequent lifting, climbing, and working in variable environments (four seasons, continental U.S.)
  • Ability to read measurements, use measuring devices, and assemble fabrication parts; manual dexterity for close inspection
