Essential Functions

  • Manage assigned game and practice times and referee games when needed.
  • Ensure the assigned site location has the necessary equipment before games and practices, and that equipment is taken down at the end of the day.
  • Have knowledge of game rules and responsibilities; attend sport-specific training as required.
  • Monitor and respond to all horseplay.
  • Promote participant safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Address questions or seek assistance as needed.
  • Develop and maintain communication with parents, players, and coaches.
  • Enforce all YMCA rules and policies.
  • Keep current on all game and practice schedule changes.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Sports Director regarding site needs, parent questions, and issues.
  • Respond promptly to all emergencies.
  • Ensure cleanliness of facility sites.
  • Maintain a courteous, friendly attitude, and serve as a positive role model.
  • Attend all relevant trainings and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Understanding of basic principles of sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer, football, and volleyball.
  • Diplomatic interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to promote caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with staff, members, and participants.
  • Ability to relate to children and parents.
  • Courteous and professional appearance.
  • Follow YMCA policies and support decisions.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Serve as a primary responder.
  • Certifications within first week: Redwoods Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazardous Communications.
  • Certifications within 60 days: YMCA-approved basic lifesaving skills (CPR, First Aid, AED, Emergency Oxygen).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work in fast-paced outdoor or indoor gym environments, at off-site locations.
  • Visual acuity for monitoring hazards.
  • High alertness and concentration.
  • Ability to physically intervene to ensure safety.
  • Sound decision-making even when distracted.
  • Repetitive stooping, bending, occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
  • Must hear, speak, and understand others; manipulate keyboards and writing tools.
