Overview

In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader II performs technical recreation work as a leader in recreational sports activities, including organizing and supervising team sports, individual sports, and special recreational events. This role involves working with youth, teens, and adults in various athletic settings, such as leagues, tournaments, and sports camps or clinics. The Recreation Leader II ensures that all safety protocols and guidelines are followed while guiding participants in their activities. The position may also involve supporting as a referee or umpire during organized sports and recreation programs. Some evening and weekend hours as needed for meetings, training, or planning and additional hours may be available to assist with other recreation programs. Enthusiasm, flexibility, and excellent customer service and communication skills are needed to be successful in this position.

The Opportunity

  • Lead and supervise recreational sports activities such as softball, basketball, soccer, and other team or individual sports. Serves as lead instructor for beginner to intermediate level sports classes.
  • Makes preparation for recreational activities at one or more facility: opens site, sets up equipment, assures that officials and teams are there, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, controls the crowd, stores equipment, and secures the site.
  • Ensure all sports activities are running on time, safely, and in a fun environment for participants.
  • Effectively communicate with teammates and participants, ensuring smooth operations and coordination of events and sports activities.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patrons in person and over the phone, resolving any challenges.
  • Complete incident/illness report forms and contact parents as required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service training sessions, and workshops.
  • Perform related work as required.

About the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

High School Diploma and two (2) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.
Availability to work flexible shifts (early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays); ability to work in a loud, fast-paced, and dynamic indoor/outdoor environment; experience coaching, playing or officiating recreational sports. A background working with vulnerable youth, experience working independently and as part of a team, experience working with schools, therapeutic recreation, youth sports programs and/or other community services or programs.
