Consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic (UPMC SSC) is a world-class hospital and international centre of excellence in orthopaedics and sports medicine, located in Santry, Dublin. It is globally recognised for its advanced clinical care, high research output, and patient-centred multidisciplinary approach. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced SEM Consultant to join our dynamic and expanding clinical team. This role offers the opportunity to work in a cutting-edge facility with access to diagnostics, procedural support, and rehabilitation services. The successful candidate will contribute to clinical service delivery and the advancement of care through education, audit, and research.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct comprehensive assessments and non-operative management of MSK and sport-related injuries
2. Develop and implement individualised treatment plans rooted in evidence-based medicine
3. Work collaboratively with an on-site multidisciplinary team, including orthopaedic consultants, neurosurgeons, rheumatologists, pain specialists, radiologists, physiotherapists, S&C coaches, biomechanists, and nursing staff
4. Utilise onsite imaging (MRI, X-ray, ultrasound) and injection rooms for guided procedures
5. Perform ultrasound-guided MSK injections (e.g., corticosteroid, PRP, hyaluronic acid)
6. Integrate advanced diagnostic tools including 3D movement analysis, strength, and power measurement into clinical practice
7. Advise on injury prevention, health screening, and return-to-play protocols
8. Support and lead initiatives in research, audit, teaching, and clinical governance
9. Represent UPMC SSC in professional and community forums, conferences, and events

Role Competencies:

• Expertise in sports and exercise medicine, MSK injury diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation planning
• Excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team
• Skilled in interpreting diagnostic imaging and performance data
• Strong understanding of return-to-play decision-making and athlete welfare
• Familiarity with electronic health record systems

Desirable (but not essential):

• Certification in ultrasound-guided procedures or regenerative injection therapies
• Experience with elite or professional athletes

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential Requirements:

• Full registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC)
• On the Specialist Register in Sports and Exercise Medicine
• Experience working with athletes and in MSK/sports medicine clinics
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment
