Special Olympics Nevada (SONV) is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through sports, education, and athlete health. We are a nonprofit organization offering free year-round training and competition programs for 2,600 athletes who compete in more than 16 competitions in 7 sports annually. Within the Community Sports and Unified Champion School Program, SONV encourages the growth of Unified Sports, bringing together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to play as teammates. In addition, SONV impacts more than 62,000 students each year by promoting inclusion on school campuses. SONV is committed to improving the overall health and well-being of individuals with intellectual disabilities through Healthy Athletes events, offering screenings and services free of charge.

Position Description (What You Will Do)

Reporting to SONV’s Assistant Director of Programs, the Programs Manager will oversee the Community Sports Program in Southern Nevada.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Promote athlete participation within the region, start new teams, and recruit new coaches while managing current coaches and existing teams.
  • Oversee all aspects of Sports Training Season (Southern Nevada)
    • Scheduling & Securing Facilities
    • Pre-registration of athletes for sports training
    • Communication to All Coaches
  • Oversee all aspects of sports competitions (Southern Nevada)
    • Event planning and logistics of (8) regional competitions. Including:
      • Securing venues
      • Recruiting, training, and managing event volunteers, ensuring everyone is assigned clear roles and responsibilities
      • Transportation of participants and equipment
      • Food and Beverage delivery
      • Pre- and post-event communication.
  • Provide local Area Directors with assistance in local area programming. Including but not limited to:
    • securing sports facilities
    • training opportunities for both athletes and coaches.
  • Equipment management and procurement
  • Ability to address any unforeseen issues or last-minute changes, and manage sports season wrapup activities.
  • Hold quarterly 1:1 meetings with volunteer Area Directors.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining relationships with state and local-level associated partners.
  • Data Entry

Skills and Experience

  • A basic knowledge of the Special Olympics mission and the passion of promoting inclusion through sports.
  • Live in or are willing to relocate to Southern Nevada.
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail to ensure all aspects of regional events are carefully planned and executed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability and willingness to work from SONV Main office.
  • Basic understanding of event management
  • Experience working with volunteers and people with disabilities.
  • Excellent computer skills, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; experience with relational databases such as Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Willingness to take direction Work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Discretion and independent judgment to creatively solve problems.
  • Some schedule flexibility, including the ability to work nights and weekends based on the sports training and competition season.
