Location: Lincoln Park, MI; West Bloomfield Township, MI; Hamtramck, MI; Taylor, MI. The position includes providing dental hygiene services under the supervision of a licensed dentist and performing a full range of duties related to oral health and disease prevention.
Responsibilities
- Performs oral prophylaxis, scaling, root planning, and polishing to remove stains, plaque, and calculus using appropriate instrumentation.
- Examines the mouth to identify dental problems (e.g., periodontal disease, tooth decay), documents findings, and reports to the dentist.
- Instructs patients in proper brushing and flossing techniques, denture care, and maintenance of oral health; educates on non-prescription medications as appropriate.
- Creates and maintains dental treatment charts and records.
- Exposes and processes dental radiographs; reads radiographs and alerts the dentist to observations.
- Assists the dentist at chair side during restorative, surgical, and endodontic procedures.
- Maintains infection control procedures, including cleaning and sterilization of instruments and disinfection of equipment.
- Maintains instruments and equipment in proper working order; follows procedures to safeguard medications, instruments, and needles.
- Schedules appointments and maintains appointment records.
- Applies topical fluorides, topical anesthetics, and desensitizing agents as appropriate.
- Completes charting, orders inventory, and performs related dental office duties.
- Removes periodontal and surgical packs and sutures as directed; conducts health screening by performing oral examinations and determining emergency needs, referring patients as needed.

Education, Experience
- Possession of an associate's degree in dental hygiene.
- Two years of experience as a dental hygienist with at least one year in a dental or medical clinic.
Licenses and Certifications
- Licensure by the Board of Dentistry as a registered dental hygienist.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of equipment and procedures used in dental prophylaxis; dental terminology and equipment.
- Knowledge of chair-side assistance techniques; dental laboratory procedures.
- Some knowledge of methods for providing dental care to children and in a clinical setting.
- Skill in dental hygiene techniques and use of professional tools and equipment.
- Ability to evaluate dental status, instruct patients in oral hygiene, maintain records, and communicate effectively.
