- Essential: Specialize in the management of patients with medical complexity and/or special healthcare needs with a focus on underserved populations with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Screen patients during routine oral health recall appointments.
- Perform preventive dental care, to include dental prophylaxis, scaling and root planning procedures with or without local anesthetic and modifications to care. ? Obtain and process dental radiography.
- Record evaluation of oral conditions and periodontal charting in the electronic health records to facilitate collaboration with dental residents and dental faculty in patient care and treatment planning for dental treatment needs.
- Advise and instruct patients on proper dental care and diet for good dental health.
- Rooming patients that are scheduled with dental hygiene, clean, disinfect, and arrange independent work area. This includes processing, evaluating, and maintaining dental hygiene instruments and advising dental assistants of supply needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities*
- Provide direct oral health care to patients by scaling, polishing, flossing, and brushing teeth.
- Evaluate and record oral conditions, complete dental prophylaxis, scaling and root planning procedures with or without local anesthesia, and administer modifications to care, including patient monitoring, recommendations for behavior modification to include oral anxiolysis and/or medical immobilization.
- Document treatment rendered and facilitate any necessary dental treatment in collaboration with dental residents and faculty providers.
- Provide oral hygiene instruction for patients, family and caregivers on proper dental care and diet for good dental health.
- Employees typically analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
- Participate in meaningful research projects in collaboration with the School of Dentistry and Michigan Medicine.
- Tasks may include training as a member of a research study team, periodontal charting, oral exams, oral health instruction, and dental prophylaxis.
Required Qualifications*
- Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
- Graduate from an accredited program in Dental Hygiene.
- Passed the National Board of Dental Hygiene exam.
- Valid Registered Dental Hygienist Licensing for the state of Michigan. BLS certification.
- 1 to 2 years of experience in the dental field.
- Knowledge of dental clinic practices and procedures.
- This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
- Must exhibit a professional and positive image when interacting with patients, faculty, and staff.
- Must adhere to a high standard of personal and professional conduct; possess excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills; and demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse population.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Work Schedule
This position is 32 hours/week with the intention of eventually becoming full-time.

Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
