POSITION PURPOSE:
Promotes dental health by completing dental prophylaxis, providing oral cancer screening and radiographic studies, charting conditions of decay and disease, and performing procedures in compliance with the Dental Practice Act. The position will participate in QI activities as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  2. Prepare treatment room for patients by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  3. Prepare patients for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating, and draping patients.
  4. Provide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.
  5. Maintain instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and selecting instruments.
  6. Select materials and equipment for dental hygiene visits by evaluating patients’ oral health.
  7. Complete dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.
  8. Detect disease by completing oral cancer screening, feeling and visually examining gums, using probes to locate periodontal disease and assess recession levels, and exposing and developing radiographic studies.
  9. Apply fluoride and other preventive agents.
  10. Assist dentist in managing dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drugs and oxygen supply, and a directory of emergency numbers.
  11. Educate patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions, postoperative instructions, and reminding them of the next dental hygiene visit.
  12. Document dental hygiene services by recording vital signs, medical and dental histories, and charting in patient records.
  13. Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential.
  14. Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  15. Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  16. Ensure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  17. Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock levels, anticipating needs, placing and expediting orders, and verifying receipt.
  18. Conserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently.
  19. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, establishing networks, and participating in societies.
  20. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  21. Place periodontal dressings.
  22. Perform vitality tests.
  23. Carve amalgams.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene or Certificate in Dental Hygiene. Registered Dental Hygienist required.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of and ability to use basic dental office equipment and instrumentation. Knowledge of current sterilization and infection control procedures. Current CPR certification. Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
