Responsibilities
- Administrative Functions: Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day to day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing the long term care facility.
- Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day to day functions of the nursing service department.
- Ensure that reference material (PDRs, regulations, professional standards of practice, etc.) at the nurses’ stations is current. Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department in meeting resident needs.
- Ensure that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects daily nursing procedures. Ensure compliance with the manual by nursing service personnel.
- Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director regarding the operation of the nursing service department. Review and revise policies, procedures, and job descriptions as necessary.
- Assist in coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of the resident’s total care regimen.
- Participate in the facility’s Quality Assurance program for the nursing service department and in facility surveys as requested.
- Review discharge plans and assist in planning the nursing services portion of resident discharge plans.
- Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services, programs, and activities. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required. Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
- Interpret department policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting as necessary.
- Protect resident information and ensure compliance with privacy and security requirements; report suspected violations as required.
- Support committee activities (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assurance) and prepare reports as directed.
Responsibilities (Nursing Care, Care Plans and Assessment)
- Inform nursing staff of admissions, room assignments, and prepare rooms for new admissions. Greet residents and escort as needed. Conduct rounds with physicians and ensure timely documentation.
- Plan and coordinate resident care with residents, families, and physicians. Notify changes in condition to physicians and next of kin as appropriate. Daily resident observation and evaluation of physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or nurse aide trainees. Review nurses’ notes for completeness and accuracy. Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Initiate IVs and collect specimens as ordered. Conduct routine measurements (TPR, BP, etc.).
- Admit, transfer, discharge residents as necessary and assist in corrective actions. Maintain status reports with the Director’s guidance.
- Authorize restraints when necessary per policies. Ensure medication administration practices meet standards. Maintain clean and safe treatment areas and ensure residents’ safety checks are performed regularly.
Staff Development and Safety
- Develop, plan, conduct, and schedule in-service training for the nursing service department. Support clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees. Attend continuing education to maintain licensure.
- Assist in safety, infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, and related training. Support risk management and incident reporting processes. Ensure PPE availability and safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Ensure staffing levels meet patient care needs and manage personnel performance evaluations. Enforce uniforms, policies, and procedures. Address complaints and coordinate with other departments to meet resident needs.
Care Plan and Assessment
- Participate in preliminary and comprehensive assessments and develop care plans that identify problems, care provided, goals, and responsible professionals. Involve residents in care planning and ensure awareness of care plans by involved staff. Review care plans and progress regularly. Assist in MDS planning and RAPs and Triggers.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Nursing degree from an accredited college or university. Training in rehabilitative/restorative nursing. 2+ years of experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
- Licenses and Certifications: Current, active RN license in this state. CPR certification. Knowledge of PCC is preferred. Maintain continuing education/licensing and stay in good standing with the State Board of Nursing.
- Skills: English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking), ability to read technical procedures and manuals, effective communication, basic mathematical and analytical abilities, and independent decision-making with strong leadership and teamwork capabilities.
- Physical Demands: Ability to move intermittently, lift at least 25 pounds, and work extended or irregular hours as needed. Must be able to interact with residents and handle emotional stress. Visual and auditory capabilities adequate to perform essential functions. Willingness to relocate or work in various settings as required.
Work Environment and Additional Information
- Works in office and nursing service areas; subject to interruptions and exposure to various hazards. May require weekend/holiday work and on-call duties during emergencies. Possible exposure to infectious materials and chemicals. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable performance of essential functions.
