Overview

Perform various laboratory functions needed for the collection of blood samples from a variety of patients. This may include registration, identification of the correct order and physician, phlebotomy, accessioning, billing, preparation, transportation of specimens to the laboratory; and delivery of result reports to clients. Greet patients entering the area, answer questions and phone calls. Interact and assist with a variety of health care practitioners. May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed, based on the department needs with within the scope of practice.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients entering the area, answer questions and phone calls.
  • Interact and assist with a variety of health care practitioners.
  • May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed, within the scope of practice.
  • Register patients, identify the correct order and physician, perform phlebotomy, accessioning, billing, preparation, and transportation of specimens to the laboratory; and delivery of result reports to clients.

Qualifications

  • Required Education: GED or High School Diploma
  • Preferred Education: Certification from a medical assistant program; Certification from a military medical or laboratory assistant program; Associate's Degree or Vocational training
  • Necessary Skills: Knowledge of venipuncture and skin puncture procedures; ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external laboratory customers; knowledge of computer data entry; good telephone communication skills; basic knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling; ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow; good decision-making skills; detail oriented; ability to handle stressful situations professionally
  • Required Licensure/Certifications: N/A
  • Preferred Licensure/Certifications: State or National Phlebotomy; Laboratory or Medical Assistant
  • Required Experience: Less than one year healthcare environment experience, including phlebotomy
  • Preferred Experience: Phlebotomy with specific experience in hospital and geriatric environment; Specimen processing; Experience using a Laboratory Information System for accessioning and specimen tracking; Registration and disposition of patients
