Work Schedule: Up to 10 hours per week. Weekly schedule to be determined and will vary, but student employee must be able to work flexible hours to include some evenings and weekends.
Position Description
Advertised Job Summary: Develop and lead fitness classes. Student instructors must feel comfortable in front of a group and be able to teach proper form and alignment for movements and exercises dynamically.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and lead safe and effective group fitness classes, providing modifications to accommodate all participants.
- Vary routines, music, and classes while following established/recognized protocol of the Wellness Center, AFAA, etc.
- Prepare and use appropriate music and equipment.
- Educate participants on proper form, anatomy, and modification of moves.
- Provide individual feedback to participants throughout the class.
- Ensure that safety standards are met and appropriate policies and procedures are followed.
- Responsible for appropriate use of all Group Fitness related equipment.
- Teach scheduled classes that begin and end on time.
- Arrive early to prepare and set up all equipment and stay after class to put away equipment, lock up stereo closet, and be available to participants.
- Inspect the aerobics rooms and all equipment to ensure they are clean and safe for patron use.
- Report and restrict use of broken equipment.
- Greet each participant in a welcoming manner.
- Inspire each participant to reach his/her fitness goals.
- Promote and role model positive self-image and lifestyle habits to your participants.
- Responsible for own class coverage when unavailable to attend.
- Monitor and record attendance of participants.
- Uphold Campus Recreation’s mission.
- Attend and actively participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
- Thoroughly complete all incident reports, report all injuries, vandalism, equipment needs, and problems immediately to administrative staff.
- Maintain regular communication with the Assistant Director – Fitness and/or student supervisor.
- Handle any other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director – Fitness and/or student supervisor.
Expectations
- Ability to develop and instruct 30-60 minute group fitness classes for students, faculty, and staff on a regular basis.
- Ability to provide own music and programs and be comfortable leading a class.
- Maintain current group exercise instructor certification(s) including obtaining CECs/CEUs as required.
- Maintain a minimum class attendance.
- Present self in approachable, friendly manner with a willingness to help a diverse range of users.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Nationally recognized group exercise instructor certification (ACE or AFAA) or specialty certification as needed.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Physical Education/Exercise Science major.
- Additional training in specialty formats may be required.
A strong preference will be given to applicants who submit a one-page cover letter describing their interest in the open position and any related experience.
