The Fitness Instructor - Aquatics is responsible for providing instruction to participants of various ages and abilities for water fitness classes.Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. GENERAL COMPETENCIES Job Specific – Every employee in this position must be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of water fitness class instruction
- Provide a safe and exercise-enhanced environment for participants
- Consistently provide excellent guest service
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills
- Motivate participants and maintain a high level of energy during classes
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe heart ratios and perceived exertion scales
- Utilize warm-up and cool-down exercises to safely engage class in exercises while minimizing injuries
Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Maintains all required certifications 2. Attends scheduled staff meetings Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion. Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required :
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the first day of actual employment
- Previous experience teaching aerobics or water fitness
- Nationally recognized aerobics or water fitness certification(s) such as AEA, ACE, YMCA, AFAA, APAI, and Silver Sneakers National Water Aerobics Certification
- Constant submersion in the water while teaching classes and occasional sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons during classes
- Constant near and far acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant hearing to be aware of troubled individuals that may be out of line of sight
- Occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to seventy-five (75) pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards
- Occasionally push and/or pull seventy-five (75) pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim
Required Materials and Equipment Water fitness equipment such as belts, barbells, gloves, microphone, and stereo equipment PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
