The University of Virginia Police Department (UPD) seeks applicants for the role of Security Sergeant who want to serve the community and help keep the University and surrounding area safe.

At UPD, Security Sergeants are unarmed, uniformed non-sworn employees playing a key role in safety and security at the University.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Engage in community service with fair and impartial practices, ensuring decisions are not based on race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
  2. Serve as a supervisory team member for the UPD security division.
  3. Assist law enforcement with securing crime scenes and provide security for special events such as sporting events and concerts.
  4. Provide personal, equipment, and property security across Grounds and the Hospital.
  5. Provide daily operational leadership and function as a working supervisor, including unlocking buildings, observing, and reporting suspicious activity.
  6. Act as a campus security authority under the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure Act.
  7. Report incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct promptly under Title IX.
  8. Supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
  9. Serve as Shift Supervisor, resolving problems and collaborating with other departments and agencies.
  10. Pass DCJS Campus Security Officer certification and Security CIT training (training provided).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Supervisory experience with the ability to lead and mentor.
  • Strong safety principles application, situational evaluation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and engaging courteously with the community.
  • Ability to facilitate operations among Security Officers, Supervisors, and the University Police.
  • Quick learning of new technologies and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to project staffing schedules, navigate various software, and operate alerting devices.
  • Training ability for subordinates on security functions and applications.
  • Knowledge of progressive discipline and collaboration with HR on personnel issues.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule including mandatory overtime and in various environments, including outdoors and in hospital settings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or higher preferred.
  • At least two years of experience in security or a related field.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's license with a positive points balance; out-of-state license holders must obtain a VA license within 90 days.
