Overview

Manufacturing Engineer - Space Hardware, Project Kuiper. Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, with capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers.

We’re looking for an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to lead Battery Pack production development. As the lead Manufacturing Engineer for a Line Replaceable Unit at Project Kuiper, you will be responsible for production process development, introduction, improvement, and maintenance of a key module on our spacecraft. You’ll be the technical voice for a team of lab engineers and assembly/test technicians, solving manufacturing challenges to deliver a battery pack for spacecraft integration and space.

You will serve as a liaison across design/development, factory operations, quality engineering, and program management to drive manufacturing processes from initial production introduction to full-rate production. You’ll balance production velocity, quality, and cost, and help drive capacity through capital investments for production scaling and automation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain all manufacturing artifacts (MBOM, Routing, Work Order Template, Work Instructions, etc.).
• Become the subject matter expert in the build and test processes for manufacturing a battery pack.
• Provide direct production support to unblock issues, troubleshoot non-conformances, and lead process improvement activities and training.
• Conceptualize, design, develop, and improve production processes (assembly, integration, test).
• Serve as primary technical interface to the development team for Battery Pack assembly and test, participating as the lead technical voice from the factory in design reviews and new product development activities.
• Own the capacity increase roadmap for production, including defining relevant capital equipment required for rate increases and leading the design, procurement, installation, and qualification of new rate-enabling equipment.

Export control

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S.

What a day looks like

• 50% - On the shop floor, working with production teams to implement new processes, review & solve key technical blockers, and perform production development testing.
• 40% - Independent development work including production improvement actions, quality control measures, capacity roadmaps, and process simplification.
• 10% - Meetings and collaboration on design introductions, production change management, and solution reviews.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Manufacturing/Mechanical/Aerospace/Industrial/Electrical) or related discipline, or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of experience integrating, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic systems
• 3+ years using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, NX, or Unigraphics
• Experience with root cause analysis techniques (Fishbone, Fault Tree, DMAIC, or related)
• Technical writing experience, including work instructions, SOPs, and test plans
• Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience transitioning from development to full-scale production (capacity models, line balancing, line layout, resourcing)
• Familiarity with Low-Rate Manufacturing Environments & New Product Introduction
• Knowledge of Lean manufacturing practices
• Experience managing technical projects
