Overview
Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background. Safely and accurately performs venipunctures, arterial and capillary specimen collections as requested in adults, children and infants. Includes interpretation of physician orders and ensuring all requests are accurately and completely processed in the information system. Completes all required compliance processes.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients using the AIDET (PHLEBOT) model and provide instructions and directions to ensure quality patient experiences.
- Evaluate physician orders for type of specimens, time of draw and any specific specimen handling requirements; use work lists to organize draws.
- Use hospital and laboratory computer systems to obtain information, clarify requests, and use a PDA and printers/phones to communicate with other departments, obtain labels, and organize work.
- Communicate with physician offices to obtain diagnosis coding information and perform problem solving; collaborate with pharmacy and other patient care staff to ensure proper, timely collection of various medication levels and tolerance tests.
- Safely collect quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures to support accurate and timely testing; use various collection devices/sharps and collect culture specimens as required.
- Maintain a safe and orderly phlebotomy work area by cleaning, organizing, rotating, and stocking carts, draw sites and inpatient units.
- Demonstrate knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for reference labs and specialty testing labs; comply with Laboratory Compliance policies and mandatory computer-based learning modules.
- Work at other healthcare facilities as needed; cover other laboratory sites across the system; utilize courier car as necessary; meet safe driver standards.
- Attend in-services and continuing education seminars to enhance personal and professional growth; participate in continuing education and in-service training.
- Promote ICARE principles to support quality patient care and a productive working environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education, Credentials, Licenses: High School graduate or GED
- Valid Driver License/Meet Medical Centers Insurance requirement for applicable locations (required to work at the Edgewood facility due to need for phlebotomists to cover nursing home draws and drive a laboratory vehicle)
- Specialized Knowledge: Computer literate
- Kind And Length Of Experience: Experience including customer service
- FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
