Phlebotomist

Shift: Day, Weekends
Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage: $17.00 - $21.25
The incumbent is responsible for collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis. Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures, ensuring minimal patient discomfort. Provides age-appropriate care from infant to geriatric. Maintains specimen integrity by following laboratory procedures for collection, handling and processing. Promotes quality patient relations and maintains confidentiality. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations.
This position may be eligible for a $1500.00 sign-on incentive.
Essential Job Functions
- Collects and prepares patient specimens including blood, urine, sputum, and cultures. Coordinate specimen collection with physicians and/or nursing staff when draws are from central lines, Groshong catheters and IV-assisted draws.
- Adhere to guidelines for accurate patient and specimen identification; identify non-compliance and take corrective action.
- Utilize computerized systems to enter orders, patient charges, generate reports, answer inquiries and resolve problems.
- Coordinate with physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers for clarifications of orders, test availability, turnaround times, and coordination of laboratory procedures.
- Refer questions about tests to the appropriate health care provider. Provide instructions to patients regarding home collection when applicable. Coordinate with patients and physicians to correct collection errors.
- Provide back-up coverage for laboratory staff on days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Duties include answering phones, requisition entry, routing orders, and specimen preparation.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and a neat, clean work area.
- Identify needs and set goals for own growth and development; meet all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
- Demonstrate behaviors aligned with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of conduct and service expectations. Maintain competency with organizational, departmental and external standards related to safety and performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet department/organization needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- 16 years of age minimum
- Completion of Phlebotomy Certification coursework or phlebotomy experience preferred but not required; on-the-job training available
- Coursework in mathematics and science preferred
Certification
- BLS within 180 days of employment
- Completion of Phlebotomy Certification coursework or phlebotomy experience preferred
