The Phlebotomist ensures proper collection of blood and non-blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture as applicable from outpatients and inpatients in all age groups as requested by physicians. The Phlebotomist also prepares specimens for analysis by processing orders via HIS/LIS computer systems, verifying specimen acceptability and performing established pre-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.
Responsibilities
- Verifies patient identification in accordance with VCU Health System Policy.
- Independently perform phlebotomy collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups (neonates to geriatrics).
- Collects non-blood specimens such as urine, stools, and sputum for testing.
- Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
- Administer oral solutions according to laboratory testing procedures.
- Stock supplies daily as needed.
- Perform data entry of test orders into the computer system.
- Process specimens according to standard operating procedures.
- Will be required to take call after hours and weekends on a scheduled basis based on primary site requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Employment Qualifications
Education
Required: High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred: Completion of a phlebotomy, or medical assistant training program
Licensing/Certification
Required: Valid Driver’s license and acceptable driver’s record if required to drive between sites.
Preferred: Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP or other recognized certification agency
Minimum Qualifications 0-3 Years
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Preferred: Basic experience in specimen collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collection). One year of experience in laboratory clerical and computer entry functions.
Working Conditions
Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse. May be required to use physical restraints. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc. Required to car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. May have periods of constant interruptions. Prolonged periods of working alone.
- Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
Physical Requirements
Physical Demands: Lifting/Carrying 0-50 lbs; Push/Pull 0-50 lbs; Stoop, Kneel, Squat, Bending. Work Position: Sitting, Walking, Standing. Additional Physical Requirements/Hazards: Manual dexterity, shift work, ability to maneuver weight of patients, hear alarms, reach above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, color vision, acuity far/near. Hazards: exposure to latex gloves, chemicals, moving parts, dust/fumes, high pitched noises. Mental/Sensory: recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, reading, logical thinking. Emotional: fast pace, multiple priorities, frequent customer interactions, noisy environment, ability to adapt to frequent changes.
