Job Title Medical Assisting Faculty/Phlebotomy Coordinator (Updated) Job Description

The Medical Assisting Faculty/Phlebotomy Coordinator is a full-time, 9-month position located on both the OCH and LLP Campuses in Monroe and Polkton, NC. Under the direction of the Medical Assisting Program Director, the Medical Assisting Faculty provides quality learning opportunities that assist students in meeting their educational goals and career aspirations in the Medical Assisting program as well as the Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate. The Medical Assisting Faculty will teach courses specifically designed and unique to both Medical Assisting program and Phlebotomy. This individual has responsibility for teaching and learning, curriculum development, advising, professional development, institutional service, and community relations.

Essential Duties Summary

Curriculum and Teaching

  • Teach a minimum of 36 student contact hours per academic year
  • Develop learning strategies and curriculum that will promote successful teaching and learning in a learning-centered environment Actively support pedagogical innovation in seated and distance instruction; encourage the use of technology within the learning environment.
  • Facilitate learning through classroom activities, distance learning experiences, workforce development, and out-of-classroom activities
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement planning through the assessment of learning outcomes at the course and program levels
  • Select and use appropriate learning materials and resources, including textbooks, library resources, equipment, and supplies to enhance learning and to maintain program currency
  • Participate in program reviews, conduct research and surveys, and prepare updates, reports, and plans
  • Stay current with developments in the field of technology and learning theory
  • Communicate with the Academic Student Success Center regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions as needed.
  • Accept teaching assignments, based on the needs of the college, at one or more of the following locations: L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), or in community locations (Anson and/or Union counties)

Phlebotomy Coordinator

  • Provide phlebotomy training and assistance to students, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills for blood collection and handling.
  • Supervise students during phlebotomy procedures to ensure safety and accuracy.
  • Develop and implement phlebotomy curriculum and training materials.
  • Maintain phlebotomy equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Stay updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques and best practices.
  • Confirm that students have completed required clinical paperwork prior to clinical entry and at the end of their clinical rotation.
  • Coordinate with healthcare facilities to provide students with practical phlebotomy experience.
  • Assist in orientation and compliance requirements for adjunct faculty

  • Participate in institutional, advisory, and program/instruction committees, campus activities, and representation of the college in the community
  • Develop strong partnerships with appropriate community stakeholders in support of program and college improvement
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate student, instructor, and course, and program documentation
  • Interact with clinical sites to ensure that policies and procedures specific to the sites are being followed
  • Actively participate in student recruitment and retention activities, admissions, advising, and registration activities.
  • Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for the position
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director of Medical Assisting, the Dean of the School of Health and Public Services, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting with a Certified Medical Assistant credential
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in healthcare performing administrative and clinical procedures as performed by medical assistants
  • Proficiency/training in electronic health records/electronic medical records

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences or a related field
  • One year teaching experience at the community college level
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and capillary puncture
  • Familiarity with a course management system such as Canvas
  • Knowledge and/or experience with learning outcomes assessment
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Working knowledge/utilization of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications
  • Evidence of effective problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated innovation within the field of education and/or technology
