Purpose:
The Level I Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation and basic maintenance of heavy machinery, with specialized expertise in haul trucks, used in mining activities, including the extraction, hauling, and stockpiling of raw materials. This role plays a key part in maintaining efficient mine production, ensuring continuous material movement, and adhering to strict safety and environmental regulations.
Essential Functions
- Operate haul trucks safely and efficiently to transport raw materials from the pit to stockpiles, crushers, or designated areas.
- Contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture while upholding the company’s core values.
- Maintain compliance with all safety policies, MSHA/OSHA regulations, and environmental standards.
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-operation equipment inspections and complete required checklists.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance, including fueling, lubrication, and cleaning of haul trucks.
- Report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
- Maintain clean haul roads, dumping areas, and work zones to support safe and efficient traffic flow.
- Use proper signaling and communication to coordinate with loaders, spotters, and other operators.
- Follow assigned haul routes and dumping procedures to ensure efficient material movement.
- Support dust control efforts by operating equipment in compliance with environmental guidelines.
- Assist with general site duties such as material cleanup, stockpile management, and pit area upkeep as directed.
- Participate in ongoing safety training and team meetings.
- Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of haul truck operating in mining, quarry, or large-scale construction environments.
- Previous work experience in construction, mining, or industrial environments preferred but not required.
- Willingness to complete MSHA New Miner training (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
- Ability to learn and follow haul truck operating procedures and safety protocols.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to recognize and report equipment issues.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and overtime as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, climb, and operate heavy equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to life up to 50 lbs regularly; occasionally lifting heavier loads with assistance.
- Ability to climb, stoop, bend, squat, lift, stretch, push, pull, twist, kneel, stand, walk, sit, and reach.
- Ability to work in uneven terrain, pits, and stockpile areas.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed
