Overview
The Space Launch System (SLS) Booster Hardware Engineer will provide on-site Booster Element Office (BEO) representation for Booster hardware development and processing activities at the Kennedy Space Center.

Responsibilities
- Provide on-site BEO representation at Kennedy Space Center – Booster Fabrication Facility (BFF), Rotational Processing and Surge Facility (RPSF), and Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).
- Provide multi-discipline expertise associated with flight hardware, handling/access equipment, production/ground support equipment and tooling.
- Provide guidance for translating mechanical design drawings/specifications into electronic shop instructions, training, and physical implementation of mechanical flight hardware assemblies and their supporting equipment, tooling, and facilities.
- Work with and represent responsible hardware subsystem managers by providing on-site insight into planning, processes, issues, and resolutions.
- Provide status of mechanical assembly and testing operations of the flight hardware and associated production support equipment to the SLS BEO.
- Provide assessments of SLS Booster programmatic and technical products in support of design and operations reviews.
- Coordinate and communicate with other MSFC/KSC organizations.
- Advise and maintain cognizance in the processing of Booster structures, assemblies, and integration hardware, including change package engineering and material review boards.
Degree in Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Typically, the educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 15 years, MS with 13 years, or PhD with 9 years of relevant experience.
The following skills/experience are required:
- Hands-on operational experience with SLS and heritage Booster hardware design/production/assembly, and knowledge of Booster operational processes, procedures, and systems.
- Extensive experience with SLS and heritage Booster assembly production planning, execution, monitoring, and control. Knowledge of production facilities, equipment, and tooling at the Rotation Processing and Surge Facility, VAB, and prime contractor facilities.
- Experience and detailed knowledge of Booster assembly operations, sequencing timelines, labor loading, and related procedures.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills with a technically diverse group of personnel (technician/engineer/quality/management).
The following skills/experience are highly desired:
- Ability to effectively communicate significant programmatic/technical issues and potential resolutions to appropriate BEO personnel.
- Working knowledge of Booster elements and production planning document development processes.
- Previously demonstrated effective working relationships with Booster design/assembly personnel.
- Understanding of the current SLS program and working knowledge of the SLS vehicle and interfaces.
Qualifications
Essential Functions
Work Environment
Office environment. Requires ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, and to interact with co-workers, management, and client. Travel may be necessary but infrequent.
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings and at NASA facilities, writing reports, and performing engineering tasks. Requires ability to use stairs or elevators between floors and buildings.
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment.
Attendance
Normal workday is 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (up to 50%). Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and planned occasions.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise good judgment is essential. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and not pose a safety risk. Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
