The Crew Leader, Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a safe and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and burnishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets as applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all surfaces; removes and disposes of waste daily; maintains custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks (e.g., changes light bulbs, changes toilet seats, unclogs toilets, changes ceiling tiles, touch up paint, secures windows, delivers supplies, sets up for facility activities, meetings, and/or conferences, moves furniture).
  • Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program (mowing, weed control, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, cleaning sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, graffiti removal as appropriate).
  • Opens or closes and secures facilities, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off lights and ensures grounds and facilities are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Performs duties independently or as part of a custodial crew; works cooperatively in group situations; demonstrates a positive outlook and a pleasant manner; offers assistance to co-workers and resolves conflicts.
  • Supervises assigned personnel, monitors staff performance, and makes improvements as needed.
  • Prepares all required reports.
  • Performs basic computer skills.
  • Performs duties of the head custodian in the event of absence, vacancy, or as directed.
  • Possesses basic English language skills; performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Additional Information

  • Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in large-scale housekeeping and yard maintenance, with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: All new and current employees are encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Language Skills: Reads and interprets safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Mathematical Skills: Performs basic arithmetic and interprets rate, ratio, and percent. Reads graphs as needed.
  • Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions; handles standard situations with limited variables.
  • Computer Skills: Uses internal HCPS email system and HCPS district webpage as appropriate.
  • Physical Demands: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling; lifting up to 55 pounds; exposure to various environmental conditions and cleaning chemicals.

  • Attendance & Punctuality: Schedules time off in advance and begins work on time. Maintains attendance guidelines.
  • Dependability: Responds to requests for service; follows instructions; takes responsibility for actions.

  • Management of People: Provides direction and feedback when applicable; involves subordinates in planning.
