Supervising Janitor (NY HELPS)

Required Qualifications

  • As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list.
  • The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a (NY HELPS) non competitive appointment may be made.
  • To be considered for a (NY HELPS) non competitive appointment candidate must have two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences, of which one year must have been at a supervisory level.
  • Must be able to move heavy objects (examples: trash bags, bags of salt and ice, floor machines and shoveling snow).
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods and communicate verbally in English.
  • Must have and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to supervise and train assigned subordinate personnel.
  • Experience supervising, excellent written and verbal communications, strong computer skills (Microsoft Office: Word and Excel, and Google Mail/Apps).

Brief Description of Duties

  • Directs Janitors and Cleaners as assigned in the cleaning of the various Main Campus Residential Buildings and grounds to maintain and improve appearance and ensure the general safety, health and comfort of the students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ensures that all resources required to support the cleaning needs are provided (including materials, equipment, and personnel) to complete the work in an economical, efficient, and timely manner with minimal campus disruption.
  • Oversee all assigned buildings, supervise staff to adhere to cleaning standards and procurement within their buildings; routinely reports maintenance deficiencies.
  • Supervise staff, provide verbal and written reports related to hiring, training, performance evaluation, personnel policy, counseling, and attendance; plan continual work schedules; complete weekly time sheets; inform staff of agency policies and directives.
  • Inspect buildings for compliance with cleaning programs; investigate complaints and take corrective action; enter work orders for maintenance deficiencies.
  • Provide verbal and written instructions for special services; ensure staff has supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and supervise periodic reports (work activity, cost reports, attendance, manpower utilization) and advise management of custodial operations status.
  • Supervise arrangement, set-up, and breakdown of premises for special events (e.g., student activities, admitted student’s day, conferences, commencement).
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes

  • This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt; eligible for overtime.
  • Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 11 Hiring Rate $47,695. This position includes location pay of $4,000 per year.

  • This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
  • At a future date, employees hired under NY HELPS may have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status without an examination; they may participate in promotion examinations for which they are qualified.
  • Employees appointed via NY HELPS are restricted for promotional appointment until their position is covered into the competitive class by the Civil Service Commission or otherwise obtain permanent competitive status. Recent notices indicate changes to this status; apply if you have a permanent NY HELPS appointment and are interested.

Note: Seniority and promotion considerations are governed by the Operational Services Bargaining Unit policies.

  • Essential Position: This is designated as essential; required to report to work during emergencies.
  • Out-of-State Applicants: Must provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the issuing state within five business days of a conditional offer and obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of start date.
