RECYCLING AND WASTE MGMT COORD - This position has the potential for a flexible work arrangement. This is a 3-year, State of Michigan grant-funded position.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to support Kalamazoo County's Materials Management Planning Committee (MMPC) by facilitating meetings, preparing required reports and materials, and leading the implementation of the County's Materials Management Plan. Serving as the County's Designated Planning Agency under Michigan's Part 115 of Public Act 451, this position acts as a liaison to local units of government, regional stakeholders, and the State of Michigan. The role is integral to tracking regulatory changes, securing funding, promoting landfill diversion initiatives, and advancing sustainable waste and recycling practices across the County.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and provide administrative staffing for MMPC meetings in compliance with the Open Meetings Act and Robert\'s Rules of Order. Maintain agendas, minutes, and research support materials.
- Manage updates and implementation in alignment with state regulations. Act as the liaison to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and industry stakeholders.
- Build partnerships with local governments and community groups to initiate collaborative recycling and landfill diversion programs. Represent the County in planning efforts and promote policy alignment.
- Research, apply for, and manage grants related to waste and recycling programs, including budget planning and reporting.
- Work with County Buildings & Grounds and Purchasing to promote sustainable waste and procurement practices, focusing on efficiency and cost savings.
- Participate in training sessions, peer network meetings, and review industry publications to remain current on technical and regulatory developments.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field
- 1 to 3 years of related work experience, such as municipal or regional planning, with a preference for candidates experienced in multi-governmental initiatives
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
