Responsibilities
- 1. Conduct a technical review of hazardous waste facility applications, develop proposed permit language, and oversee the administrative process through to permit issuance. Coordinate with staff to ensure the process is incorporated in RCRAInfo.
- 2. Review report submittals required by the Hazardous Waste Management Permit.
- 3. Conduct hazardous waste inspections to ensure permitted hazardous waste facilities and non-permitted generators of hazardous waste are in compliance with applicable regulations. When necessary, oversee enforcement resulting from any noncompliance.
- 4. When requested, provide outreach and support to facilities related to the application of the hazardous waste rules.
- 5. Conduct other duties as assigned by management.
What you'll need to be Successful
The majority of permitted hazardous waste facilities require remediation due to historical operations. Candidates with knowledge in geology and hydrology or are interested in acquiring the technical knowledge in these environmental sciences will make a strong candidate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Environmental Engineer in Training: A Bachelor's Degree in an engineering curriculum from a school or college approved by the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as of satisfactory standing, preferably with courses in environmental engineering;
- OR A Master's Degree in an engineering curriculum from a school or college wherein that same engineering curriculum at the undergraduate level is approved by the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as of satisfactory standing, preferably with courses in environmental engineering;
- AND A Bachelor's Degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related science curriculum of four (4) scholastic years from a school or college other than those approved by the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, preferably with courses in environmental engineering.
- Geologist in Training: Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, registration with the Mississippi Board of Registered Professional Geologists as a Geologist in Training or passage of the Fundamentals of Geology exam with confirmation from the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists and pending registration.
- Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist I: Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-1 year of experience.
