Salary: $18.88 hourly. Actual salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Location: Central Area / Central Disposal Facility / Cocoa. Work schedule is variable and includes evenings, weekends and holidays. This is an entry-level service position at a landfill site, responsible for disposing of solid waste and maintaining grounds. This is heavy physical work with exposure to hazardous materials, dirt, dust, odors, fumes, moving machinery, noise and vermin. Responsibilities include cleaning grounds around the landfill site and designated rights‑of‑way, mowing and grounds maintenance, directing trucks to dumping areas, assisting in unloading trash, inspecting waste streams for hazardous items, removing undesirable items, washing heavy equipment, and responding to emergencies in accordance with the County Emergency Management Plan and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform entry-level service work at a landfill site, disposing of solid waste and maintaining grounds.
  • Direct trucks to appropriate dumping areas and open large, heavy trailer doors.
  • Direct the public to unloading sites and assist in unloading trash.
  • Inspect the waste stream for flammable or explosive items and remove undesirable items.
  • Wash tractors, trailers and other heavy equipment or vehicles.
  • Respond to emergencies in accordance with the County Emergency Management Plan and safety procedures.

Requirements

Requirements: Six (6) months of experience performing manual labor, lawn maintenance, grounds maintenance, or other similar outdoor labor.

Special Requirements

Special Requirements: Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida driver6;s license and maintain during employment. Must be able to read contractor-generated hauling tickets identifying contents and cubic yards and write simple records and/or reports. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster, employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
