Pathology Assistants typically have the following duties: Surgical Pathology Duties: Gross examination of surgical specimens (describing and dissecting tissues removed during surgery). Preparing specimens for microscopic examination. Selecting tissue samples for further analysis (e.g., histology, molecular testing). Autopsy Duties: Assisting or performing postmortem examinations. Dissecting bodies, examining organs, and collecting samples. Documenting findings and helping prepare autopsy reports. Laboratory Work & Administration: Ensuring proper specimen handling and documentation. Maintaining lab equipment and supplies. May supervise pathology lab staff or assist in teaching medical students/residents.

Job Requirements :

Bachelor's degree in a related field (biology, chemistry, health sciences). Master's degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program (usually 2 years, includes clinical rotations). Certification: After completing a master's program, you must pass the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exam to become: PA(ASCP) - Pathologists' Assistant certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Licensing (if required): Not all states require licensure, but some do. Requirements vary by state, so it's good to check with the state board of health or professional regulation.
