Overview
The job of Paraeducator - Academic Adaptive (AA) is done for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the general education classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.

Responsibilities
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Assists students, teachers, and other certificated personnel for the purpose of implementing instruction and/or IEPs.
- Attends meetings and trainings (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de-escalation training, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Develops instructional activities under the supervision of the assigned teacher (e.g. academic subjects, daily living, physical, communication, behavior/social skills) for the purpose of evaluating student progress on IEP objectives.
- Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintains confidentiality following HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines.
- Maintains instructional materials and records to ensure availability of items and mandated reporting.
- Monitors students in various environments to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Collects data and observations to support individual student goals and progress.
- Provides clerical and general classroom support (data entry, correspondence, copying, filing, etc.) to document student progress and support classroom activities.
- Supervises students to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Works under direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines for classroom safety and positive learning.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned; may be a 1:1 paraeducator for specific students to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
Qualifications
Education and Licenses
- Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent (or meet alternative criteria).
- Paraeducator must meet one of the following: passing score on ParaPro assessment, or an associate degree or higher, or 72 quarter credits / 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher.
Certificates and Licenses
- CPR/First Aid Certificate
- Valid Washington State Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability
- De-escalation and restraint training
- Paraeducator Certificate Program
Experience
Job-related experience is desirable.

- Background clearances: FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprints
