Job Summary:
The Functional Skills Special Education Teacher is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive educational program for middle school students with significant cognitive disabilities. This role focuses on a curriculum that includes functional academics, vocational skills, and essential life skills, all designed to promote student independence and successful transitions to adulthood. The teacher will manage a classroom team, work closely with families, and collaborate with a wide range of professionals to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities: Instruction and Curriculum:
Develop and implement individualized education programs ( IEPs ) that align with student needs. Adapt curriculum and instructional methods to teach functional academics (reading, math, writing), communication, daily living skills, and vocational training. Classroom Management:
Supervise and direct paraprofessionals and support staff to effectively implement student plans and maintain a safe, engaging, and structured classroom. Assessment and Data:
Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress, collect and analyze data, and use this information to inform instructional decisions and report on IEP goals. Collaboration:
Act as the case manager for assigned students. Work with parents, therapists (e.g., speech, physical, occupational), school counselors, and administrators to ensure a coordinated approach to student learning. Compliance:
Maintain accurate and confidential records and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local special education laws and policies. Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field. Valid state teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education or a related area. Experience working with students with significant disabilities in a middle school setting is highly preferred. Skills and Abilities:

Strong understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices. Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with students, families, and staff. Empathy:
A patient, compassionate, and student-centered approach to education. Adaptability:
