The duties described below are indicative of what the Environmental Health Specialist might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any county ordinances created for the position of Environmental Health Specialist. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned: Administrative Functions: Work under the direction of the Environmental Health Coordinator. Conduct environmental health inspections to achieve compliance with applicable laws and promote good sanitation practices in public facilities such as food service establishments, body art facilities, schools, swimming pools and other recreational facilities. Follow the WI food code standardization and become standardized in other environmental inspection programs. Maintain compliance with responsibilities as outlined in the Transient Non-Community Water System contract with WI-DNR. This includes water sampling, sanitary well surveys, annual site visits, county contract training, seasonal startups and follow-up on all failed tests by issuing and enforcing do not use or boil water advisories. Perform monitoring or sampling for suspected hazardous elements in a scientific manner utilizing instruments that require applying the laws of chemistry and physical sciences to identify human health hazards. Conduct laboratory analysis of water samples. Perform inspections and provide consultation on a variety of environmental health issues including, but not limited to: lead, radon, water testing at county-owned beaches, rabies control and vector control. Assist in development of policies and procedures for all environmental health services of the Department of Public Health. Write and share with vendors corrective action plans, environmental enforcement orders and citations. Prepare for court action and appear as a witness for court cases, when required. Access and manage computerized inspection information from data bases for DATCP inspections (Health Space). Conduct epidemiological investigations of food borne illness and other disease outbreaks suspected of being caused by environmental factors, as well as illnesses suspected to have been caused by toxic substance exposure. Respond to environmental health emergencies on a twenty-four hour basis in conjunction with local emergency response team and appropriate state agencies. Prepare reports, forms, correspondence and memos for the County Health Officer/Public Health Director as assigned or required. Assist the County Health Officer/Public Health Director in administering and enforcing other county ordinances, including but not limited to: human health hazard ordinance. Support and participate in Public Health accreditation, re-accreditation, 140 review, annual report, and department strategic plan as assigned by Manager. Participate in department-wide performance management/quality improvement and strategic planning activities as assigned. Participate in department-wide preparedness activities to include National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) training and exercises. Community Relations Functions:
Maintain effective working relations with local government officials, other governmental agencies including but not limited to the WI Department of Health Services, DNR, local zoning, Department of Safety and Professional Services, DATCP, local law enforcement, Corporation Counsel, local emergency management, industry, business and the general public. Conduct educational activities within area of expertise and participate in civic meetings to answer questions concerning environmental health problems and to promote acceptance of sanitary regulations. Represent the Public Health Department by serving on various committees and advisory groups. Customers:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental/Public Health, Microbiology or related science field required. • Two (2) years environmental health experience preferred. • Knowledge of sanitary codes, epidemiology, communicable and environmental-related diseases required. • Wisconsin Sanitarian registration required within 12 months of hire. • HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) Certification preferred • A valid driver's license required. • A cell phone is required.
