GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs a variety of skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of water distribution and transmission and sewage collection systems; maintenance of buildings and grounds Work is performed under direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

• Responsible for Authority water/wastewater infrastructure maintenance functions;

• Assists in the repair and/or replacement of water and sewer mains;

• Assists in the repair and/or replacement of fire hydrants;

• Assists in the installation of pumps, valves and motors;

• Inspects sewer lines for breaks and infiltration;

• Performs skilled preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance repairs on pumps, pressure regulating and control devices, meters, fire hydrants, and valves;

• Performs basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and welding tasks;

• Reads and interprets basic construction plans;

• Cleans and paints small tanks, machinery, and equipment;

• Operates a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks; operates dump trucks, pickup trucks, service trucks, loaders/backhoes, excavators, trailers and tampers; loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other materials as required;

• Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with water and sewer utility operations and maintenance;

• Operates lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed whackers, flushing equipment, and other equipment utilized in water and sewer utility operations and maintenance;

• Performs building and grounds maintenance tasks;

• Maintains Authority vehicles, equipment, and tools;

• Trains personnel as necessary;

• Follows appropriate safety procedures at all times;

• Deemed essential personnel.

• Available to work on an on-call, as needed basis.

• Performs related work as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance; basic knowledge of and safe use of equipment, materials and techniques used in operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and sewage collection systems; basic knowledge of and demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools; ability to read and interpret basic construction plans; demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to train personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective work relations with co-workers, employees and supervisors.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

:

Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance; basic knowledge of and safe use of equipment, materials and techniques used in operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and sewage collection systems; basic knowledge of and demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools; ability to read and interpret basic construction plans; demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to train personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective work relations with co-workers, employees and supervisors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school and six months experience in water distribution and sewage collection systems maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Class A CDL preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to perform manual physical work; ability to climb and work in and out of open excavations, manholes, vaults and lift up to 75 lbs; ability to work in various weather conditions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License which is free of violations for a period of three years. Valid Class A Virginia Commercial Driver's License or acquired within first year of employment. Must pass air brakes knowledge test.
