Position: School High School Counselor

FLSA Status: Exempt / Employment Type: Full Time / Reports To: Academy Principal

Minimum Experience: Entry Level

Purpose: To provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program designed to address the social, emotional, educational and college/career readiness needs of high school students.

Education & Job Requirements:

Possess Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from an accredited institution Professional Counselor Educational License Or Possess a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate with an endorsement in counseling (NT) One year of successful counseling experience at the high school level Satisfactory criminal background check required Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Implementing the use of Guidance Curriculum with a systematic classroom approach to student development through lessons on the following: academic/ career planning, social connection and supportive competitiveness, anti-bullying/ conflict resolution, transition planning and study habits. Coordinating responsive services to immediately addresses student concerns (referral or self-initiated) and includes: crisis counseling, peer programs, dropout prevention/outreach, individual, small group counseling, consultation with parents, school staff, administrators/ community agencies and referrals

Creating individualized plans to help students identify interests and manage their personal and career development with the following: curriculum planning, educational development plan (EDP)/career exploration, self-advocacy and social connection. Oversees the guidance component and facilitates other school programs through guidance needs assessments and program audits, ongoing professional development, guidance needs assessments and program audits, ongoing professional development Counselors facilitate healthy student development by serving as: Leaders who promote comprehensive guidance and counseling services, and share valuable information and skills that contribute to a positive school experience overall. Counselors who provide direct support services to students through individual and small group meetings, crisis intervention and classroom guidance in cooperation with teaching staff. Consultants who collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators, teacher assistants, the school nurse, outside agency personnel and others to determine how best to address student needs and facilitate healthy development. Coordinators who manage referrals to outside agencies, support school-community partnerships and arrange in-school counseling such as advisor-advisee, student assistance and peer counseling. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Employee must be capable of performing physical demands of the job, including but not limited to lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, and standing for long periods of time. Work environment has a raised noise level.
